Race 6 Report- The Fastest 10 course in town! (or Devon)

In contrast to the last TT in the Series Race 6 was a proper time trialist course, with an early start to boot! I didn’t make it over there, but Matt Vahiboglu has kindly written a report, cheers Matt!

Race six of the South West Women’s Race Series saw four ladies competing in a 10 mile time trial at Sourton Down near Okehampton on Sunday 30th June.

On a stretch of the A30 regarded as one of the fastest ’10’ courses in the area, fog and drizzle provided challenging conditions for the riders who went head-to-head as the first four starters just after 8am.

Proper foggy!

Ayse Vahiboglu (Exeter Wheelers) rode a new personal best of 23:51 to edge out Zoe Betteridge (North Devon Wheelers South Fork) by 12 seconds, with Wiebke Rietz (1st Chard Wheelers) rounding out the podium.

The dual carriageway course on the northern edge of Dartmoor has the advantage of a longer, predominantly down-hill outbound leg but a westerly breeze meant a slight six-mile headwind to be overcome before the gradual climb to the finish. By the turn Ayse had caught Wiebke having started one minute after her and set off chasing, but not quite catching, Pippa Wheeler (Exeter Wheelers) who also rode a new PB time after starting first.

So damp was the air that riders who’d sought the aerodynamic advantages of a visor were left squinting through the raindrops and, in the case of a certain EWCC women’s race series competitor, carrying the visor in her hand for the last mile.

After warming up with a cup of tea Wiebke was heard expressing an interest in racing more time trials. This is undoubtedly due to the thrill of 25 minutes at threshold on a cold, wet dual carriageway and nothing at all to do with the outstanding selection of cakes and biscuits on offer, in keeping with the finest traditions of the sport.

With only four ladies participating (and only two from the series) the organisers sportingly gave prizes down to fourth place. Thanks once again to The Bike Shed and Greens of Devon for providing prizes, and to Revo Racing’s Andi and Becky Timothy for a first class event.
