2016 Race Series Dates

The dates for the 2016 South West Women’s Race Series have been finalised. You can see the events on the right hand side any time you want to check a date and more details can be found on the Race Calendar page. We will try to add in British Cycling links when the race entries go live – some of them already have and our advice would be to enter as soon as possible to give race organisers an idea of numbers and to avoid cancellations wherever possible.

Please share the race calendar with anyone you think might be interested.

The 2015 Series has now finished and the full results have been posted on the Results Page for you to check out. We had lots of new racers taking part and plenty of familiar faces too. Overall, it’s been a brilliant year for participation and we can only hope to take that to a new level next year. If you know anyone who might be interested, please direct them to the series!

Our deserving prize winners for the overall points competition were:

1st Place Emma Cockroft from BikeShed – UEX

2nd Place Zoe Betteridge from North Devon Wheelers – South Fork

3rd Place Heidi Viles from Somerset RC – The Bicycle Chain

The 4th Cat competition was also won by Emma Cockroft after only starting racing this year and achieving some brilliant wins at circuit races. Congratulations Emma!

The Vet 40+ competition was won by Sarah Godwin from Team Tor 2000 (formerly Somerset RC) after a consistently good season. Congratulations Sarah!

The Junior competition was won by Emily Attfield from Velosure-Starley Primal but sadly, she couldn’t be with us at the presentation. Congratulations Emily!

Finally, we’d like to say a massive big thank you to series sponsor Kalas who provided us with the trophies and winner’s jersey. They also sponsor several local women’s race teams and do a lot in the cycling community so make sure you support your local companies! Also, a HUGE thank you to all of the cycling clubs, commissaires, race organisers and volunteers who help make the events happen in the first place. Here’s to 2016!

Exeter Wheelers Rockbeare Road Race – Series Finale

Once again, Exeter Wheelers put on a fantastic event for our series finale and we finished the season with a bang! Rockbeare is a small village just outside of Exeter and the 11km race course winds it’s way through the back lanes, up a long shallow climb which steepens before turning into the finish line straight and then joins onto a long stretch of the B314 (with a prime sprint on some laps) until you turn back towards the village. First time round, it doesn’t feel that tough but after climbing up to the finish line a few times your legs really need some coaxing to keep going. Last year’s field was split into three groups early on and eventual winner Heidi Viles (Somerset RC) rode away on the climb unchallenged.

It was a beautiful, warm September day and the local cycling club cheering squads were out in full force. Defending winner Heidi joined us on the start line, as well as current series leader Emma Cockroft and second placed Alex Sheehan (both Bikeshed-Bianchi). We also had company from National Hill Climb Champion Maryka Sennema (Paceline RT), Lucy Shaw (Matrix Vulpine) and some very strong riders from the Southern region in the shape of Corinne Clarke (Ride 24/7) and Georgina Panchaud (Cycleworks) who had been climbing well all season. Luckily, the first time up the climb was neutralised so the bunch had a chance to settle into a nice rhythm.  As we hit the climb the second time, Maryka was already itching to go and the pace ramped up with riders dropping off the back and eventually catching back on as the course flattened out. This pattern repeated itself a few times until we lost some completely and the bunch was whittled down to a small strong group with Maryka, Heidi and Emma all visible at the front pushing on. The first prime was taken easily by young track sprinter Lucy Shaw  with Maryka and Sarah Godwin (Team Tor 2000) in hot pursuit. As the pace slowed slightly and riders freewheeled down the B314, Emma pushed on, keen to not give those sitting in a chance to ease up. The next ascent of the climb saw another dig from Maryka and the elastic was stretched more than once in the group, the sound of heavy breathing replacing any small talk in the bunch.

The second prime saw Jessica Duffy (Feather Cycles Racing) chasing after Maryka and Corinne’s sprint and then pushing on ahead for a brief leg stretch. The bunch, lead by Emma, soon caught back up shortly after the village and the pace slowed momentarily as many of the riders sitting in refused to come though. At this point, it would have been nice to see a break go away but with many tired legs and lots of looking around, the group stayed together. Coming into the final corner, Maryka was leading after a powerful final climb with Heidi and Corinne tailing but Emma managed to move up around the outside and give it one last push to take second behind deserving winner Maryka and cement her series victory. Joanne Jago (Performance Cycles) and Georgina crossed the line next and an incidental shoulder barge from Jennifer Powell (Elitevelo) saw her taking 7th and Jessica coast the last metre for 8th place. Lucy and Zoe Betteridge (North Devon Wheelers – South Fork) rounded out the top ten after refusing to let the climb get the better of sprinter and time trial specialist respectively.

DSC_0259A big thank you to Exeter Wheelers and the South West NEG and officials for making this such a well organised and very safe race. More of this next season please!

Let me know what you want next year …..

As I hope you all know by now, Rockbeare this Sunday will be our series finale. I’m picking up the trophies on Saturday and will be there at the end to present them to the winners. I would also like to hold a very short (20 mins) feedback meeting to help with the series planning for next year. I hope that some of you can stay and answer a few questions hopefully with some useful suggestions. Nik.

Only 2 races to go

With the loss of the use of Ilton we have definitely lost the last race of the series. This means that Rockbeare will be our series finale. Winner’s jersey is being made and I’m just about to order the trophies.

Good luck and see you at the last race for the final presentations!

Latest news – 14th July 2015

There have now been 6 races completed. Emma Cockcroft takes the overall lead and that of the riders who started the season as 4th cats. Heidi Viles lies in a close second and leads the 30+ category. Sarah Godwin is the highest ranking 40-49 rider and Emily Attfield our highest ranking junior.
Unfortunately we have lost one TT and one road race and the final race of the series at Ilton is under threat. I have spoken to the race organisers and he has told me that negociations are still under way and I’ll let you know more when I know.
If we do lose Ilton we may just go ahead with a series of 9 races (as we will have lost one of each type) and take the best 6 foward for the final rankings.
Anyone want any more info or have any suggestions, ideas, opinions (OK maybe not too many opinions!) then e-mail me on swimbikerun@blueyonder.co.uk (not our previous series organiser Becky, although she will forward stuff on to me). Thats all for now. Nik.

Latest news

The series is well underway now with  4 races completed and the 5th coming up this weekend. After a bit of a worry we now have a women’s race at the SW Circuit Race Championships but the event as a whole is needing some volunteers to help out. If you are not racing or are bringing someone to watch you race who can help it would be really appreciated. Drop me an e-mail to let me know. Nik (swimbikerun@blueyonder.co.uk).
